ST. Cabrini Nursing Home
Dobbs Ferry, New York

- Approximately 900 precast components
- Coordination with an existing building
- Concealed supports and connections
St. Cabrini Nursing Home is a 304-bed facility offering 24-hour, skilled nursing care. In 2006, Schwab began work on this project, expanding this existing building’s overall square footage by 55%. Schwab Structural Engineering, Inc. designed complex, heavily-loaded components configured in a challenging, angular layout. The aesthetically critical nature of the project required Schwab to conceal supports and connections. This project will be completed in 2009.

BARN TO HOUSE CONVERSION & RENNOVATION
Fredericksburg, Texas

- Exterior: Restored and connected structural stone masonry
- Framing: Structurally insulated wood panels (SIP) and hand-hewn timber beams and columns
- Foundation: Stiffened slab-on-grade concrete
Schwab investigated the existing structure and recommended during the design the integration of new materials into this 100-year-old barn. To preserve the building’s historical materials, Schwab utilized the original, hand-hewn timber frame wherever possible. SIPs were discreetly used to support structural loading while preserving the variable quality and condition of the antique timber rafters and purlins.
